And that so many of their cars are in running condition. This seems like a win-win for promoting the museum and working out any kinks in the cars.

It really works for their goal of teaching people about the cars instead of just displaying them. They are also the only museum I know of that lets people see what they have in storage in addition to what is on display in the main museum. The Lane is on my bucket list of things to do.

Reminds me of the Air and Space annex at Dulles airport (The Udvar-Hazy). Not only do they have countless (many gigantic) pristine aircraft on display, there’s a whole viewing platform in the back for all the restorations. If you ever find yourself in the area, even just a few hour layover there, it’s totally worth it (free admission, paid parking).

I was there when they were restoring the Apollo capsule. It really is amazing

Woah, I live about 10 minutes away and never knew about the platform overlooking restorations. Thanks!

Yep, the upper level walkway to the left of the space exploration area and shuttle. That whole corner of the building is restoration for the entire Smithsonian aircraft collection. Last time I was there they had about 4 B-17s in varying states of assembly (mostly donor planes).
Probably about like David Tracy’s front yard...
